SmartWorkout alternative: maybe the kit isn’t the question

SmartWorkout sells hardware plus a content library. We sell the method: a 9-week periodized resistance band program, as a PDF you own, one-time payment. The two complement each other well.

If you are searching for a SmartWorkout alternative, first pin down what you actually need. SmartWorkout is a French brand of resistance band kits: clip-on tubes, a bar, handles, a door anchor, sold with filmed exercises and video programs. It is equipment, with content around it.

GymDB sells no equipment at all. We sell a resistance band training program written by a certified coach: 9 periodized weeks, 3 sessions per week, planned progression with RIR-based intensity, delivered as a PDF you keep forever. It works with any set of bands that has a door anchor, including a SmartWorkout kit.

So the real question is not SmartWorkout versus GymDB. It is whether you need equipment, a method, or both. This page answers it honestly.

What SmartWorkout does well

Let us be direct: if you do not own bands yet, SmartWorkout is a serious option. The kits are complete (tubes, bar, handles, door anchor, ankle straps), the brand advertises a lifetime warranty on manufacturing defects with a 60-day return window, and the library of filmed exercises genuinely helps you learn the movements. For a beginner starting from nothing, getting all the hardware plus video demonstrations in one box is real value.

That is simply not our trade. We sell no equipment and do not plan to.

What we do differently

A content library gives you options; a program gives you a path. Our Resistance Bands program does not offer thirty choices. It prescribes 9 weeks, 3 full-body sessions per week, with periodized blocks, planned progressive overload and intensity set by RIR, session after session. You do not decide anything; you execute and tick boxes.

And here are our honest limits: no app, no automatic tracking, no embedded videos, no community. A PDF requires self-management. In exchange it is yours forever, offline, with no account and no subscription, for 39.50 EUR paid once. The rest of our home catalogue lives on the at-home programs page.

What the Resistance Bands program actually contains

Nine weeks split into three blocks of three: first movement learning and tension calibration, then volume accumulation, then intensification, followed by a lighter week to absorb the work. Every full-body session fits on one page: exercises, sets, reps, tempo and target RIR, with alternatives for the moments when a door anchor is not an option. A paper tracking sheet ties it together: you write down the band you used and the reps you got, and the progression rule tells you exactly when to move up to the next tension.

On the equipment side, all you need is a progressive band set with a door anchor and, ideally, ankle straps; any standard commercial kit qualifies. Nothing else: no app to install, no account to create, no connection during a session. That is also the format’s honest limit: nobody will chase you if you skip a week.

The two are complementary, and that is fine

Our program runs on any band set with a door anchor: a SmartWorkout kit fits perfectly, and so does whatever brand is already in your cupboard. For many readers of this page, the most logical combination is exactly that: SmartWorkout hardware, GymDB programming.

This is not a sales trick. They earn their living selling kits; we earn ours selling programs. The two purchases do not compete, they add up.

When SmartWorkout is the right choice

Pick SmartWorkout if you are starting from zero on equipment and want warrantied hardware with video demonstrations; if you prefer to vary sessions freely inside a large library rather than follow a fixed plan; or if video simply motivates you more than a document with boxes to tick. In those three cases, their offer serves you better than ours.

Pick our Resistance Bands program if you already own bands (theirs or anyone’s) and what you lack is the one thing no kit contains: a multi-week structured progression designed by a coach, with no subscription attached.

Verdict: hardware versus method, each wins at home

For equipping your living room, SmartWorkout wins: complete kits, an advertised lifetime warranty, filmed demonstrations. For turning those bands into measurable results, a periodized program wins: that is what we sell, 39.50 EUR once, no subscription. Many of our customers use both, and if your bands are already gathering dust, the missing piece is rarely more equipment; it is a plan with an end date. Still weighing guidance against autonomy? Our coach or program guide walks through that choice calmly.

Does the GymDB program work with a SmartWorkout kit?

Yes. The Resistance Bands program is written for any band set with a door anchor. A SmartWorkout Élite kit comfortably covers the resistances the plan calls for.

Does SmartWorkout require a subscription?

No. As of our August 2026 check, the kit is a one-time purchase and includes some programs; an optional app subscription exists at roughly 5 to 8 EUR per month depending on the plan. GymDB has no subscription at all: 39.50 EUR once, PDF for life.

How much resistance do I need for the Resistance Bands program?

A progressive set running from light to heavy, plus a door anchor. Most kits on the market qualify; the program explains how to adjust tension to stay in the right RIR zones.

I am a complete beginner: kit with videos or PDF program?

If you own neither equipment nor experience, a kit with filmed exercises is a good starting point. When you want structured progress, a periodized program takes over. You can test our approach for free with the Starter Week.
