Passing physical fitness tests: army, firefighter, police

An entry exam has one feature the gym never has: a date. On the day, nobody asks whether you were tired that week. Here is how to prepare the physical tests for army, firefighter and police selection, with a deadline in mind.

Know the tests, then train specifically

Most selection tests revolve around a common core: an endurance test (often the shuttle run, also known as the beep test), bodyweight strength tests (push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups), sometimes an obstacle course or loaded carry. The first step is not training more, it is reading the regulations of YOUR exam: standards and events vary between forces and from year to year.

Then the golden rule of any test preparation: train specifically. Easy jogging prepares you poorly for a beep test if you never train changes of direction at imposed pace; the bench press does not replace pull-ups.

8 weeks: the right preparation horizon

Eight weeks are enough to turn decent fitness into a passed exam, provided they are structured: four sessions a week mixing specific cardio (pacing, intervals) and strength targeted at the events. The first two weeks assess your real level on each test; the next four build the load; the last two sharpen without exhausting, because arriving fresh counts as much as arriving prepared.

The most common mistake is adding sessions three weeks before the day. That is the surest way to arrive injured or drained: at that stage you consolidate, you no longer improvise.

Rehearse the test before living it

A fitness test is also a pacing exam: starting the beep test too fast costs two levels, mismanaging your effort on a course costs the clock. Schedule at least two full timed rehearsals in exam conditions, with the same sequences. The second rehearsal, compared to the first, tells you exactly where to gain points.

A program built for entry exams

Fitness Test Prep structures exactly that logic: 8 weeks, 4 sessions a week, cardio and strength targeted at army, firefighter and police test events, with rehearsals placed at the right moments. It is a PDF program: progression written week by week, every session detailed, and it stays yours for your next attempt. To build a base before the prep, see also the athletic preparation programs.
